3 / 5 ★★★☆☆ “Interesting world building but a generic plot and characters, with too few surprises for me to really enjoy it nearly as much as I wished to.”

I’m still not sure about this book, I didn’t love it, but I was unable to put it down, a strange combination to be sure. Tom Lloyd delivers a strong series debut introducing you to Lynx a mercenary with both a past and a strong sense to do what’s right and to the Riven Kingdom a land engulfed in constant skirmishes and multiple factions all vying for power. Lynx, whilst searching for his purpose in life is swept up in a mercenary company and their mission to save a kidnapped girl, things take a turn for the worst however when his mission is not as it seems and he becomes involved in plots he didn’t wish for.

Lloyd has built an interesting world to explore, although to me it did feel very reminiscent of other series with characters who feel slightly over done by this point, although there are points where some of the characters are allowed to shine, they feel not nearly as memorable as they could have been. Lynx also feels very familiar as a noble character with a shady past, I feel Lynx is interchangeable with too many other characters from this genre, but who knows maybe it’s just me. It is however a good introduction into a series that appears to have more to tell, there is much to explore in the book even though it feels as if you explore very little of it, but perhaps that is due to it being the first book in a series.

I think my problems with this book stemmed from how generic I felt that it was, apart from our main character, we learn little backstory, and even then our main character still felt like a mystery as I turned the last page, to me this doesn’t make the story as satisfying as it could have been. Despite this I will endeavor to pick up the next book in the series and hope to learn more of the world as it genuinely seems an interesting place and I will hope for more standout characters as the series moves forward.

Did you enjoy the book? Tell me why or why not below.
